What is acceptable for yard waste?

Recyclable yard waste encompasses a variety of organic materials from outdoor spaces that can be repurposed into valuable compost or mulch. Acceptable items include grass clippings, leaves, and small branches, which are ideal for composting. Additionally, yard waste such as plant trimmings, pinecones, and monkey balls can be recycled.

Larger items like tree limbs and shrubs, when cut into manageable pieces, also qualify. By recycling these natural elements, we not only keep them out of landfills but also contribute to a healthier ecosystem.

What is NOT acceptable for yard waste?

Non-organic materials such as plastic bags, weed barrier, pots, and plant tags should never be included, as they cannot decompose and contaminate the composting process. Additionally, treated or painted wood, including old fencing and garden furniture, is not suitable due to potentially harmful chemicals.

Rocks, soil, dirt, and food waste also fall outside the scope of yard waste recycling. Pet waste and invasive plant species are other notable exclusions, as they can introduce pathogens and pests into compost. By ensuring only appropriate organic yard materials are recycled, we maintain the quality of the compost and support a healthier environment.

Important notes:

  • Yard waste cannot be mixed in with any household trash.
  • Yard waste can either be placed loose in your container or in paper bags.
  • Tree limbs and brush must not be any longer than 3ft and 1-inch in diameter.
  • Tree limbs and brush must be tied into bundles, bagged, or canned, to help our drivers avoid having to pick up every individual stick.
  • Yard waste bin lids must be able to fully close when placed curbside for pickup.

The Polly Drummond Hill Community Yard Waste Site is open to the public Saturdays & Sundays. Yard waste can be dropped off at this location free of charge.
